“Originating in mythology yet still present throughout science, Aether
was thought to be the matter which permeated the universe beyond the
limits of the terrestrial sphere.

For their duo show, Henry Galano and Jacob Sirkin have negated the
recognizable elements of Greatorex, which confront the viewer upon
entering the galley. Starting from the street they pose the question
when does reality switch into an artistic experiment?

Visceral and emotional responses to an unknown environment have
been utilized to displace the viewer and delete the distance usually
established between an art object and the spectator.

Through illusion and manipulation of both the digital and physical
space, the audience is invited to consider a constant negotiation of alternate realities. Meandering through some that are tangible and some
that are code.

The formal means which have been deployed act as symbols of a modernist past; we see here the icon of the minimalist cube, transformed
into a camouflaged projection display method. In turn, a large-scale
sculpture is created highlighting light and its impermanent nature, fully
situating the experience of the viewer in the present physical moment.

An industrial quantity of water has been carefully camouflaged, disturbed by a dripping mechanism re-connecting the work to the space it
inhabits. A constant noise revealed to be digitally amplified completes
the transience between the real and the virtual, with the creation of
the digital media we consume today referenced here as a never-ending
process.

The duo has re-invited the concept of quintessence and mythology into
the digital era, arguing that the invisible matter which binds humans
to the world around them is not only social and scientific but also an
artistic conundrum.”
